The anniversary list is a prompt, not a rule

Nobody checks. There is no body that enforces tin at ten or china at twenty, and no gift receipt anywhere asks which list you followed. The year's material works as a narrowing device: it turns "what do I buy her" into "what does the copper version of her life look like."

That distinction matters because the named objects are usually wrong. "Desk sets" for a seventh anniversary assumes she wants a desk set. She may want a copper mug, a copper bracelet, a hammered tray. The material is the useful part. The example object is filler from 1937.

Where the anniversary list came from

The tradition is old and mostly unrecorded. It is commonly traced to medieval Germany, where a wife marked her twenty-fifth with a silver wreath and her fiftieth with a golden one. The Victorians commercialized the idea, and the full year-by-year list most Americans print is generally credited to the American National Retail Jewelers Association in 1937.

That origin explains the list's shape. A jewelers' trade group wrote it, so the milestone years happen to be the ones that sell precious metal. That is not a reason to distrust the list. It is a reason to hold it lightly.

Our take: Our call is traditional for the ordinary years and modern for the tenth, fifteenth and twentieth, where the modern list upgrades to diamond, watches and platinum. When the two lists agree, at twenty-five and fifty, the material is the gift and the choice is only about form. After sixty, stop consulting the table entirely and work from what the year itself gives you.

Note the thinning at the bottom. No one governs these assignments, and the versions in circulation part ways past sixty, especially where the British and American lists differ. Treat the last rows as folklore worth knowing rather than fact worth defending.

The first twenty years, material by material

The early materials carry the symbolism people repeat: paper is the blank page, cotton two threads interwoven, leather the thing that toughens with use, wood the roots taking hold. Nice, all of it. More useful is that the early materials are cheap and everywhere, which suits early-marriage budgets.

The fourth year's linen is the easiest demonstration. Linen bedding is a material she already replaces, upgraded to the version she would not buy herself. The same move works at seven, where copper gifts range from mugs to jewelry without any desk set in sight.

Diamond, the modern tenth, earns its place for a practical reason. The National Park Service's page on the Mohs hardness scale (2023) puts diamond at 10, the top of the scale. Twenty-one to fifty: the years most guides skip

Here is the gap. Twenty-one through twenty-five carry materials again: brass, copper, silver plate, opal, then silver at twenty-five. For twenty-one through twenty-four, jewelry-trade versions also print gemstones, iolite, spinel, imperial topaz and tanzanite in that order, which rescue you when brass and opal fight her style.

Twenty-six through twenty-nine have no settled material on any list we would print as fact. Some guides invent flowers for these years; the versions disagree with each other. If you want a token, borrow the neighboring metal or skip the convention entirely.

Thirty is pearls on both lists, and then the lists go quiet through the mid-thirties. Thirty-five is coral or jade. Forty is ruby on both lists, forty-five sapphire, and forty-six through forty-nine have no settled material either. The pattern to steal: in an unassigned year, the surrounding milestone's stone, ruby or sapphire, is a perfectly good prompt.

After fifty: the long game

Past fifty the list becomes poetry. Emerald at fifty-five, diamond again at sixty, blue sapphire at sixty-five, platinum at seventy.
